Staining wood siding

Fagan Painting stains wood siding the right way: thorough prep first, then premium stain built to handle Pittsburgh's weather. We start by pressure washing to remove dirt, mildew and failing finish. Then we sand rough or weathered boards, replace or repair damaged wood, and protect your landscaping, windows and trim. We apply your choice of transparent, semi-transparent or solid stain, matched to your siding's condition and the look you want.

We stain cedar, pine, redwood and engineered wood, on lap, shake and board-and-batten siding. The result is a rich, even finish that enhances the grain, repels moisture, and resists fading and peeling for years. Every job is backed by our two-year warranty.

Siding Staining FAQs

Staining siding raises a lot of the same questions, from how often it needs to be redone to which type of stain is right for your home. Here are answers to the ones Pittsburgh-area homeowners ask us most. If yours isn't covered, check our general painting FAQs or call (412) 680-0102 and we'll be glad to help.

How often should wood siding be restained?

Most wood siding needs restaining every 3 to 5 years with a semi-transparent stain, or every 5 to 7 years with a solid stain. Pittsburgh's humidity, freeze-thaw cycles and sun exposure can shorten that. South- and west-facing walls usually wear first. Fading, graying wood or water soaking in instead of beading means it's time.

What's the difference between semi-transparent and solid stain?

Semi-transparent stain adds color while letting the wood grain show through. It's the most popular choice for cedar. Solid stain looks more like paint, covering the grain while keeping the wood's texture. Solid stain lasts longer and hides weathering or mismatched boards, so it's a good fit for older or repaired siding.

When is the best time to stain siding in Pittsburgh?

Late spring through early fall is ideal, roughly May through October. Stain needs dry wood, temperatures above about 50°F, and no rain for at least 24 hours after application. We schedule around the forecast and check the wood's moisture before staining so the finish penetrates and cures properly.

Can you stain siding that was previously painted?

Usually not with a transparent or semi-transparent stain, because the paint blocks it from soaking into the wood. Painted siding can often take a solid stain after proper cleaning and prep. Otherwise, the paint has to be fully stripped first. We'll assess your siding and recommend the most practical, cost-effective option.
